Elected in November in a tough-fought race for Maryland’s 1st Congressional District, Dr. Harris becomes Maryland’s second Republican Representative in the US Congress. Maryland has eight Congressional Districts and Harris now joins Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (6th District) as the lone Republicans. Just a reminder, Members of the House are elected for two years and Senator Cardin’s term is up in 2012 as well, so we have lots of Democratic seats to shoot for in Maryland in the Presidential year. By the way, here is a list of all those who will be in the 112th Congress.
Andy Harris has a unique understanding of freedom. His parents fled Communist invasion after World War Two, joining hundreds of thousands of other refugees fleeing the totalitarian Soviet regime. Like so many others, they saw America as President Reagan’s “shining city on a hill”, and came here to build a new life with literally nothing more than the clothes on their backs.
Since then, Andy has devoted his life to hard work, giving back, and fighting to preserve the freedoms envisioned by our founders and framed in our constitution. Andy served 17 years in the United States Naval Reserve, including active duty during Desert Storm. He served as Commanding Officer of the Johns Hopkins Naval Reserve Medical Unit, and is a member of the American Legion. He achieved the rank of Commander.
As a State Senator for 12 years, Andy has been a proven fighter for less government and more freedom. He signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge 12 years ago and kept his word. He has consistently stood with Maryland families against more government and higher taxes.
He stands squarely with Maryland families for a balanced budget and less spending, deficits and debt. As a physician, Andy has the experience to understand the complexities of health care reform and yet the common sense to know a government takeover won’t work. He always supports our veterans, seniors, gun owners and sportsmen, and the unborn.
In his campaign for Congress this year, Andy has won the endorsement of many Republican officials in the First District, as well as placement in the National Republican Congressional Committee’s coveted Young Guns program.
Andy and his wife Cookie have been married for 30 years and have five children. They are active members of St. Joseph’s Church. Andy is a practicing physician at several hospitals on the Eastern Shore, as well as at Johns Hopkins, where he also received his undergraduate and medical degrees.
